THE BEST Places To Visit In Benin

The following list highlights some of the best places to visiting in Benin. So if you are in Benin, I recommend visiting the following:

  1. Royal Palaces of Abomey, Abomey, Benin
  2. Ouidah Museum of History (Portuguese Fort), Ouidah, Benin
  3. Kota Falls, Natitingou, Benin
  4. Musée du Soleil, Ouidah, Benin
  5. Pendjari National Park, Atakora, Benin
  6. Mount Sokbaro, Donga, Benin

See all places on Google Maps.

1. Royal Palaces of Abomey, Abomey

Between 1625 and 1900, twelve kings succeeded each other in Abomey. All of them had their own palace built within the same enclosure. UNESCO had inscribed the palaces on the List of World Heritage Sites in Africa. Subsequently, the site had to be placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because Abomey was hit by a tornado on 15 March 1984.

2. Ouidah Museum of History (Portuguese Fort), Ouidah

Located in the old Portuguese fort, the museum is somewhat neglected and empty of tourists but is very useful to learn more about the history of the city. The local religious tradition is characterised by many contemporary religious items and photos of local ceremonies.

3. Kota falls, Natitingou

It is a garden of Eden in this arid environment. Here you will find: freshness, tranquillity and fresh air, lush vegetation, compared to the surrounding bush landscapes. Kota Falls is not very touristy, so it is very quiet and very enjoyable.

4. Musée du Soleil, Ouidah

Located in Ouidan, it is a museum of contemporary art, which offers works of art to admire, but its structure also boasts a beautiful architecture worthy of admiration. It also has a great bar-restaurant.

5. Pendjari National Park, Atakora

Pendjari Biosphere Reserve has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. It has nothing to envy the parks of Kenya or Tanzania with the bonus of being able to see, if you are lucky, the largest population of elephants in West Africa, the African manatee, the lion, the leopard or the cheetah, in the most pristine and genuine way.

6. Mount Sokbaro, Donga

It is cited by some as the highest point in Benin, with an altitude of over 600 metres. The hill is part of the Atakora Mountains quartzite massif that continues west into Togo. Hiking activities take place at the top of the hill, but the area needs more tourism development.
