The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Dominican Foods. If you manage to be in an Dominican restaurant or you are visiting Dominica, I recommend the following:
4. Callaloo Soup
This is a typical dish of the islands that make up the Lesser Antilles, which is why it is not only consumed in Dominica. It’s a rich, thick cream made from herbs and crab meat or fish. Many people think it looks like a simple spinach soup, but although it is one of its ingredients, its taste is totally different.
5. Mountain Chicken
It is the most typical dish in Dominica, usually served with peas and rice, and its main ingredient is a frog that in Dominica is known as “Mountain Chicken” and its main characteristic is the taste of its legs as it resembles the taste of chicken. This frog is in danger of extinction so they serve another kind of imported frog cultivated in hatcheries for this purpose and with a similar taste.
6. Rum Cocktails
Rum is made on the island and is the drink of choice. Many distil their own brands or mix popular brands with spices of their choice (e.g. rosemary rum). There’s a party every day in Dominica, and it’s celebrated with rum. It is also the basis for many popular and traditional cocktails in bars and restaurants.
7. Sancocho
In Latin America many countries have their own version of sancocho, but in Dominica it is a meat stew full of hearty flavours, combining different types of meat mixed with root vegetables and plantain for a sweet touch, all cooked for a more or less prolonged period of time, resulting in a sort of thick, flavourful stew. It can also be found in a somewhat simpler version with only one type of meat and chicken, but it is originally that variety of meat that makes it so indigenous to its land.
