TOP 10 Traditional Ghanaian Foods

The following highlights some of the popular Traditional Ghanaian Foods. If you manage to be in an Ghanaian restaurant or you are visiting Ghana, I recommend the following

1. Boiled Yam or Plantain with Kontomire Stew

It is a very popular dish in Ghana. It is traditionally made from cocoa beans. It is traditionally enjoyed with various dried, preserved, fresh and even marinated fish. Kontomire is traditionally served with yams, boiled green or ripe plantains and even rice.

2. Banku and Tilapia

It consists of a ball of dough that is made from leavened flour and served with dishes and casseroles. It is usually made with cornmeal, but often a mixture of cassava and cornmeal is used. It is eaten with flavourful grilled tilapia, lobster, lobster or meat and a flavored sauce.

3. Jollof Rice

Jollof Rice is an extremely popular dish throughout West Africa. It consists of rice with tomato, onion, garlic and red pepper, to which chicken, fish or beef is added. It can be served hot or at room temperature. Every family has its own recipe and way of preparation. It often has chicken, fish or vegetables.

4. Kenkey and Fried Fish

It is made from ground corn that has been allowed to ferment before being steamed or boiled into a final solid form. The final product, kenkey, is served with a sauce or as an accompaniment to a fish (most commonly) or meat dish.

5. Waakye

It is a combination of beans and rice that was originally a northern dish, but is now found almost everywhere on the streets of Accra. Eating waakye will open the door to the different tastes and flavors of Ghana, as the main dish is served with other side dishes such as fried plantains, gari macaroni and avocado.

6. Tuo Zaafi

It is similar to banku, although very soft and less sticky, and is made from corn dough with a little tapioca. What distinguishes Tuo Zaafi and makes it a national favourite are the rare and nutritious herbs used to make the soup, including dawadawa and ayoyo leaves.

7. Kelewele

Kelewele is an African snack made from fried plantain, sliced and flavored with a mixture of spices. It is a street food that can be found in every corner of Ghana. It is sometimes served with rice and stew, peanuts, or just as a dessert or snack.

8. Omu Tuo

This is a hemp rice supplement. It is made by boiling very soft sticky rice and then kneading or rolling the rice into sticky balls. It is often served with peanut soup, but also with palm kernel soup.

9. Red-Red

Red Red is a traditional Ghanaian dish made with West African beans, palm oil and tomatoes. It combines a rich, slow-cooked bean stew with a hearty helping of fried plantain.

10. Fufu and Goat Light Soup

Fufu is usually prepared by kneading a paste of cassava and green plantains and then forming it into balls by hand. It is usually eaten by hand and served with a delicious soup.
