Sintra – Lisbon, Portugal

Sintra, Lisbon, Portugal, is a lovely destination where nature and human forces join perfectly. Together, they bring an amazing experience for all nature, history, and archeology lovers. Because when it comes to historical buildings and landscapes Sintra has it all. First, you can visit the Park and National Palace of Pena or Quinta da Regaleira. Things To Do In Sintra

Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira is one of the main jewels in Sintra, Portugal. Once you’re there, you’ll see the castle peeking through the gardens; and beyond that, a forest full of secrets. On the other hand, this property dates back to the middle of the 19th century, but its construction is inspired in Portugal’s monarchy times. For that, you can find many Christian elements and others not so canon-like. For example, deep in its woods, you’ll find an Initiation Well dedicated to the Order of the Temple and the cult of the Holy Spirit.

Park and National Palace of Pena

Address: Estrada da Pena, 2710-609 Sintra.

Opening and Closing Hours: from 110 AM to 6 PM.

Alongside the previous one, the Park and National Palace of Pena is an obliged stop in Sintra, Portugal. Back in the 1830s, this building was the summer home of the royal power couple, Dom Ferdinand II and Queen Maria II of Portugal. Centered around a former convent, the palace shines with great colors that can be seen from every corner of the park. Plus, the Palace of Pena is the brightest example of Portuguese romantic architecture.

Sintra National Palace

Address: Largo Rainha Dona Amélia, 2710-616 Sintra.

Opening and Closing Hours: from 9:30 AM to 6 PM.

Unlike others, Sintra National Palace is right in the middle of the town. With its cone chimneys and white exterior, the palace makes a strong impression upon visitors, but the interior is even greater. Erected at the end of Medieval times, the Muslim influence is tangible in every mosaic ceiling and decorated wall. And when you add the beautiful garden that surrounds it, it feels like you’re walking on divine ground. The palace was once owned by King John I and King Manuel I of Portugal; now it’s an open cultural destination.

Castelo dos Mouros

Address: Estrada da Pena/Parque de Monserrate, 2710-609 Sintra.

Opening and Closing Hours: from 10 AM to 6 PM.

El Castelo dos Mouros or the Castle of the Moors is one of the main ruins in Sintra that dates back to the Muslim rule of Iberia. Over a thousand years ago, this castle used to be a control point of the city. For that, its design is one of a fortress. Now in ruins, it’s open to the public. But be aware, because of its long-distance from town, and requires comfortable clothing and shoes. When it comes to the building, once you’re there you’ll be blown away by the sight of the city, and the wall that surrounds the castle.

Monserrate Palace

Address: Rua Visc. de Monserrate, 2710-591 Sintra. 

Opening and Closing Hours: from 10 AM to 6 PM.

The Monserrate Palace is a beautiful cream-colored building 15 minutes outside Sintra. Its origin dates back to the 17th century, but it was rebuilt in 1858 by Englishman Francis Cook, late Viscount of Monserrate. The palace itself is greatly influenced by the romantic Moorish architecture, which includes two domes and detailed windows. Within the main building, you can also find a library, an awarded European garden and many fountains throughout.

Visit Borboletário do Parque Urbano da Quinta de Rana

This beautiful place belongs to the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and is centered around butterflies. For that, this sanctuary main function is to secure the life of these insects since their early stages of life. While breeding the butterflies, they secure the area to satisfy their biological needs. So, if you’re looking to spend some quality time with nature, head down to Cascais.

Cost: visits with no tour guide are free, but you only get to see the garden where the butterflies are. While guided tour tickets cost $4,5 per person and include entrance to the laboratories and a full explanation on the sanctuary functions.

This museum belongs to the Portuguese Air Force and functions as a time machine, as many models are on display from past battles. Visit Museu Anjos Teixeira

This museum holds the sculptures of father and son, Artur and Pedro Anjos Teixeira. Both are two of the most representative sculptors of Portuguese contemporary art. Watch a play at Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval

Address: Praça Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro, 2710-720 Sintra.

Olga Cadaval was the marquess of Cadaval through marriage lines. Born in Turin but married in Sintra, Olga became a special agent in the reconstruction of the cultural heritage of his husband’s family, Dom António Pereira de Melo. After his death, she remained devoted to the arts; and thus, this center honors her work. It’s a small building, but it will definitely shock you once everything is set and ready.

Visit Biblioteca Municipal de Sintra

If you want to know more about Portugal, spending the afternoon at Sintra’s library is one great option. This beautiful yellow building holds a wooden and modern interior to read at your own pace. You can even access their Sintra’s history area if you want to get deep in the roots of this location.

Visit Boca do Inferno

Address: Av. Rei Humberto II de Itália 642, 2750-642 Cascais.

Boca do Inferno or Hell’s Mouth is a natural viewpoint on the western coast of Portugal. Here, the water force shaped the rocks into an arch, where the waves keep crashing today. When the water enters, especially on high activity, it makes an awful sound that granted its name. Furthermore, the legend says that a magician flood this place to prevent her lover from scaping with another man.

Visit Church of Santa Maria

This modest church is one of the oldest one in town. It dates back from the late 12th century but has gone through many renovation projects since then, especially due to earthquakes. Its medieval exterior still stands alongside other modern additions on the paintings and the statues inside.

Visit Saint Peter’s Church

This simple-but-beautiful church had to be rebuilt on the outside after the 1755 earthquake. On the inside, there’s an amazing white and blue tile depicting St. Peter’s life, to whom this building is dedicated to. This kind of art has become a Portuguese landmark and sets a nostalgic tone throughout the church.

Practice climbing at Parque Aventura Sintra

If you’re looking to build some strength at your favorite sports, then you can come to Parque Aventura Sintra. This complex offers indoor climbing, doing rappel and zip line on a secure open area. For climbing, the wall goes up to 15 meters and you’ll attached to a safety line at all times.

Practice rappel at Pedra Amarela Campo Base

For the more experienced climbers and outdoor sports lovers, Pedra Amarela Campo Base is a wonderful choice to do some training. This place belongs to the southern part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and is equipped with all kinds of challenges throughout the area. Relax at Miradouro Praia do Carneiro

Address: Rua da Praia da Adraga, Colares. 

Right before heading to your hotel, take a moment to get to this viewpoint at Carneiro Beach. Access can be difficult, so it’s better if you do it by car. But once you’re there you can enjoy from an exclusive view of the west coast of Portugal and maybe catch the golden afternoon hour. You can also camp in here.

Ride a horse at Beloura Centro Hípico

Beloura Horse Center is known as the host of many horse championships both national and international, but also for their horse ride lessons. Surf at Praia do Guincho

Guincho Beach is one of Portugal’s most popular beaches. Its crystalline water and white sand welcome all kind of people every year for aquatic sports, such as surf and kitesurf. With less presence of rocks, this beach is a fantastic spot to catch some nice waves and practice your skills. Plus, it’s a guarded beach that belongs to Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

Watch a car race at Autódromo do Estoril

Estoril’s race track has been opened since the 70s and has been the home of many international championships on both Formula 1 and Grand Prix, for cars and motorcycles. The longest part of the track passes the 4 km mark and has 13 curves to get comfortable with speed. So if you’re fantastic cars and big shows, this one’s for you.

Sintra, Cabo da Roca, and Cascais All Day Private Tour

You could find some hotels that will price you for your reservation before arrival, but this only a safety measure. The money will be returned to you. On the other hand, tax charges are mandatory, with a rate of $2 USD per person for a 3 night-stance or less. Any stance longer than that is tax-free.

How to get there

You can get to Sintra either from Lisbon airport or Cascais airport:

From Lisbon Airport

  • By train: it’s a 1-hour ride divided into two parts. Once you get out of the airport, you need to catch bus line 1 or 2 to Lisbon Entrecampos station. That takes 12min and cost $5USD. At the train station, you’ll catch train line 18200, which can take up to 10 min to arrive and costs $3 USD. Once aboard, it takes 38 min to get to Sintra station.
  • By bus: it’s a 44 min ride divided into two parts. From the Bus Terminal at the airport, you need to catch bus 783 to Amorerias and stop at Joaquim António De Aguiar street. That takes 18 min and costs $4 USD. From there, you’ll be catching the Sintra Express bus, which costs up to $12 USD for a 26 min ride. But be aware, because of the bus schedules. Sintra Express works from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M., then from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M with one bus per hour.
  • By taxi: you can catch a taxi outside the airport. It’s a 22 min ride that can cost between $55 USD and $65 USD. Or, you can get an Uber taxi for half the price.

From Cascais Airport

  • By taxi: it’s 15 min ride that can cost up to $30 USD. You can call a cab or get picked up by any of the following services: Taxis of Cascais, Taxigal or Praça de Táxis da Torre. You can also call an Uber taxi and get half the price.
  • By bus: there are two routes to get to Sintra. The first one, it’s a 40 min ride divided into two parts. Once you get out of the airport, you need to cross to the front street and grab bus line 462, from Tires Prison to São Domingos da Rana Cemetery. That takes 5 min. From there, you’ll take bus line 467 and in 35 min you’ll be at Sintra station. The second route is also divided into two parts. Departing from Tires Prison too, you need to catch bus line 462 up to Cascais Shopping. That takes 12 min. There, you need to wait for the bus line 418, which can take up to 20 min. Once aboard, it takes 14 min to get to Sintra station.

Inside Information

During both spring and autumn, Sintra’s temperature can rise above 20 °C easily. Plus, humidity can be a tough element to beat. So be weather-ready and hydrate yourself appropriately. You’ll also need to apply sunscreen and wear walking-shoes on a daily basis.

When it comes to the attractions, Sintra’s Moorish roots are constantly present. So, when you’re at the Castle of the Moors or the Monserrate Palace, you might be ordered to take off your shoes to access some areas. Likewise, when it comes to moving around the city we recommend using public transportation or a car to get to the attractions, due to Sintra’s hightops and valleys.

Finally, Sintra is a UNESCO heritage site with wide green areas, so avoid polluting the environment and harming any species.

Entry requirements

By presenting your British citizen passport, you can stay in Portugal up to 90 days. If you’re planning to stay any longer or to work during this time, you must request a Visa. 

On the other hand, even if a no-deal Brexit takes place, trips shorter than 90 days shouldn’t be affected, as Portugal is part of the Schengen Area. The only thing you need to have is a valid passport, with more than 6 months of validity to be able to travel abroad, and sufficient funds for your stance.

Local laws and customs

Having an ID with you is a must-do throughout your trip. You must be able to validate your identity by showing either a copy of your ID or the ID itself to any officer that requests it.

On the other hand, drugs for recreational and personal use can be an object of sanction, that can be in the form of the subtraction of the drug, a monetary sanction or of belongings. The sanction may apply even if you just have it in your bag. Please, cooperate with the law.

When it comes to gambling, this type of activity can only be performed in licensed places. That is, in casinos and alike buildings. Gambling in any other area will count as a felony.

Money

Portugal’s official currency is the Euro. Thus, all payments must be done in the said currency. Credit card payments aren’t available most of the times, with hotel bookings being an exception. Note that booking in advance will let you pay in your own currency. By doing that, you avoid losing money for the exchange rate.

Your best option to exchange currency is through ATMs, where you can use your debit card to get cash. But first, contact your bank to know more about international fees and valid ATMs abroad. Finally, avoid doing exchanges at the airport, shops or exchange houses, as they tend to use the tourist rate and not the commercial one.

Haggling

Haggling is not very common in Sintra, but you can try your luck at local stores. Especially if you’re buying many items.

Tipping

  • Restaurants and food services: 5-star restaurants charge up to 10% of your bill on the tip. For other incredible places, you can give up to a 10€ tip. If it’s just good, a regular 2€ tip. 
  • Taxi rides: the minimum tip is 1€, but you’re free to give more, and always check your change.

What to Buy

  • Arts and crafts: Portuguese blue tiles are one-of-a-kind art pieces made with dedication and outstanding precision. Plus, they can depict anything you want. Other things you can find are paintings, sculptures, embroidery, and glass crafts. 
  • Handmade products: You can find amazing furniture and other items for house decor completely handmade in this little town. Just like wooden toys, clothing pieces, handbags, carpets and many more. All of them with quality seals and beautiful colors.
  • Wines and other beverages: Due to the continental winds and hot weather, Portuguese wine is one to die for. Alongside a great variety of rums and both dark and light sweet alcoholic beverages, the Portuguese alcohol industry is growing more each year.
  • Chocolate: The chocolate industry is another you can’t miss. You’ll find chocolate products almost everywhere, from dark salty chocolate to the sweetest ones. Even some with rum or wine inside. The most famous chocolatier is Arcádia and you can find one in Estoril and Cascais.

Safety and Security

Before starting any trip, update yourself on the place you’re visiting. Your national Tourism or Foreign Office can provide you with this information. Plus, look out for your country’s embassy or consulate address and phone number in the said country and log it in on your mobile. In case something happens, the help you need it’s only one call away.

Crime

Tourists can be objects of common thieves, such as pickpockets and scammers. So if you’re carrying highly valuable objects, use your hotel’s safety boxes and keep your money aside from your personal documents. Plus, having an online copy of your documents in a PDF format can save you hours of stress. 

If you happen to be robbed, report the crime to the nearest police station and to your embassy or consulate representative, as taking someone identity is a felony and could lead to bankruptcy. 

Sexual Assault

Sexual assault has been highlighted in the public eye for months now and many safety measures have been shared to prevent it. The most commons are buying your own drinks and keeping an eye on them at all times, as many rape drugs can be poured into your glass. Always go partying with a partner, so you can keep an eye on each other. Don’t take anonymous taxi rides, instead, stick to your hotel transport options to be safer and trackable.

On the other hand, items as pepper spray and tasers are banned as luggage for both the UK and Portugal, while using pepper spray is highly restricted in Portugal. So, if you are in a vulnerable situation common keys can be used as a self-defense weapon and could provide you with enough time to run off. Likewise, if you suspect you’re being followed by a stranger reach out to bigger crowds to lose him or her. Don’t go straight to your hotel, instead, change your route and report the situation to the nearest authority representative or office. Seek shelter there.

Last but not least, if you happen to be a victim of sexual assault while abroad reach out for the nearest medical center to get help, both physical and mental. Plus, you must contact both local officers and your embassy or consulate representative to report the crime, and ask for instructions on how to proceed.

Terrorism

With a heightened alarm of terrorist attacks due to the political interventions in the Eastern hemisphere, nations, individuals, and groups linked to it could be possible targets. Because of that, terrorist attacks could happen everywhere, and Portugal isn’t an exception. Since these events are usually indiscriminate, they could take place in touristic locations were both locals and foreigners meet. So, be attentive at all times. 

If you happen to be caught up in one, seek refuge as soon as possible and report yourself to your nearest embassy, consulate or Foreign Office and ask for instructions on how to proceed.

Health

Traveling can be a stressful activity, especially if you suffer from an illness or if you happen to be injured. For that, we highly recommend you to carry an ERM medical kit and a health card with you. This card should include your blood type, allergies and any other condition that limits your basic functions. Plus, an emergency contact person always comes in hand, specifically for those who travel alone.

On the other hand, prescribed medicines may vary abroad. If your medicine happens to be banned or restricted in the country you’re going to visit, you will need to contact your prescriber to get a signed explanatory letter and export permission. In these cases, you will need to carry with you the required amount of medicine to cover your stance. This also applies if you can’t find information about the legal status of your medicine or its components. 

Finally, whether you’re traveling before or after the UK leaves the EU, it’s important to get a comprehensive travel insurance that includes cover for emergency medical treatment and other associated costs. The existing EHIC arrangements are not an alternative to travel insurance, as some health-related costs including medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment, and non-urgent treatment, are not covered. Natural disasters

Due to the high temperatures, Portugal’s biggest natural threat is forest fires. They happen annually in summer, but they can also take place early on the year. Because of that, we encourage you to be attentive at all times and to take care of your surroundings. Don’t leave trash behind, especially bottles and cigarette endings during any trip or camp area.

On the other hand, to know which areas are more prone to fires, you can visit Portugal Meteorologic Website. And if you happen to see one, contact the Civil Protection guards or dial the emergency number, 112.  Don’t fight it yourself, instead, alert the others and try to mark the place on a map or write down the location on your mobile.

Finally, causing fires in Portugal is heavily condemn by law, even by mistake.

History

Sintra has been inhabited throughout history, especially after the Moorish takeover of the Iberian Peninsula in early Medieval times. Under this period and for about 400 years, Sintra was used as a fortress and a military area, with many others to cultivate. Even after the Christian reconquest in the late 11th century, Sintra was still a farming town; but now, with royal attention, it became a summer getaway for the monarchs and their guests. Because of that, Sintra saw progress and investment as services were needed.

Sadly, true attention to Sintra didn’t come until the 1775 earthquake that brought the region to the ground. Since then, the advance has been wide and deep, but there’s still work to do as nature and technology try to complete each other.

Capuchos Convent

Opening and Closing Hours: closed until June 2020.

Capuchos Convent is an abandoned Franciscan convent 15 minutes outside Sintra’s downtown. Built in 1560 and now in reconstruction, the place follows the poverty rules of those monks. With little furniture and cold open spaces, this convent is a reminder of that puritan self-sufficient life that can only be lived by so many. Plus, attached to the house you’ll find a modest church where the monks performed their ceremonies. Finally, this place holds incredible grace that will make you appreciate life better.

Azenhas do Mar Beach and Village

Azenhas do Mar is a beautiful location 10 minutes outside Sintra’s downtown. The village is on top of a cliff and the beach rests at its feet. So, you can spend a wonderful day walking through its street, eating great food, and then swimming in its natural ocean pool. Yet, you need to be careful as the beach has many rocks surrounding the area.

Sintra-Cascais Natural Park

This UNESCO heritage destination is located in the border of Sintra and Cascais municipalities, just 10 minutes outside Sintra’s downtown. Yet, this park is an open-but-protected one. The area holds incredible species of both animals and plants. And when it comes to human life, it has many areas were housing is permitted. But be aware, because of its difficult access.

Park and National Palace of Queluz

Address: Largo Palácio de Queluz, 2745-191 Queluz.

Opening and Closing Hours: from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Queluz Palace is an iconic Baroque building located on the route from Lisbon to Sintra. It shares great similarity to the French palaces with its maze garden at the front, and luminous exterior. Furthermore, the palace was the residence of royal couple Queen Maria I and King Peter III during the second half of the 18th century. And after the king’s death, it turned into a safe place for the queen to mourn him and hide away from the crowds.
