How to get there
There are two main ways to get to Freycinet Park from Hobart Airport. (HBA)
- By Bus: first, you need to take a taxi from the airport to Midway Point. Over there, you take the bus to Swansea, Victoria St. Finally a taxi will take you to the Freycinet national park. It is a 2-hour and 43 minutes journey of $13 to 16 USD.
- By Drive: you can rent a car to the park. It is a 2-hours and 31-minute journey of $16 to 24 USD.
When to go
This is a perfect place to visit all year round. If you want to avoid crowded seasons, don’t go there from December to February.
How long
If you want to enjoy all the beautiful landscapes and beaches, I recommend you to spend at least a week.
Opening and Closing Hours
In the first place, to visit Freycinet National Park. the center that introduces you to the natural and cultural heritage of this region is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm from November to April. From May to October it opens from 9 am to 4 pm.
Planning
Above all, you must know that you’ll need a special Park Pass to visit the Wineglass Bay. You can get it at the Visitor Center.
There are different camping areas in this place, however, you must contact the visitor center and book them in advance. Also, at the bay, you can find different water supplies. There are tabs located along the dune, at the honeymoon bay picnic, and the powered campsites.
Inside Information
If you are going to camp at the park or the bay, you must know the area is limited to the barriers areas on allocated sites. Therefore, Caravans, campervans, camper trailers or minibusses are only permitted in the dune area.
Also, you can find different campsites with cold showers. Besides, you must know that this area is very dry and vulnerable to fire. So there are not allowed fires in the national park.
History
The wineglass bay is located at the Freycinet Peninsula. This place was named in 1802 after a member of Nicholas Baudin’s expeditions. Before that, in 1800, this was a working area for whalers and sealers. In the same way, Wineglass owes its name to that time where the whaling stations operated there.
In the same way, this park is one of the oldest in Tassie, founded in 1916. Nowadays, this is the perfect spot for swimming or lazing on the beach.
