Opening and Closing Hours

You can visit the Merenid Tombs anytime you want. However, I recommend you to go early in the morning or when the sun is setting down.

Planning

If you want to walk through the city you can easily get lost. I recommend you to hire an official guide. Also, you must visit this at sunset to have the greatest view. In the same way, don’t go at night because it can be problematic to go down the road.

Besides, the best way to soak up with the city’s culture is by staying in a riad. This is a beautifully restored traditional house with hospitality people and access to the medina. Finally, to visit the tombs you don’t have to book in advance.

Inside Information

Traffic in the city can seem chaotic. The best way to navigate there is in a red petit taxi or a grand taxi. With them, you’ll be able to explore the city limits and outskirts.

Also, remember to take your camera with you and your most comfortable shoes.

History

These ruins are believed to date from the 14th century during the Marinid dynasty. Then, The Marinids conquered Fez and turned into their capital. After that, they built a palace and a mosque on the hill.

Finally, in the 14th century, the members of the Marinid dynasty were buried in the royal necropolis at Chellah. However, the sultan Abu Inan and his successors were buried in the hill and this lasted until the demise of the dynasty.

Nowadays, there are no archaeological excavations out on the site of the tombs.
