Above all, the South of Market District will give you an unforgettable experience as one of the main roads in the city of San Francisco. Also, you will be able to experience a better contrast between a quiet area and a charming neighborhood full of people. You can also enjoy art galleries, pubs, restaurants, and cafes. Besides, this district will offer you a little bit of everything to enjoy your trip.

Things to do

California Historical Society

Start your trip by visiting the organization’s museum galleries showcase with the history of the Golden State. Over there, you’ll find amazing photography, manuscripts, posters, and artwork. Also, you will get to know a place that will give you all the history of this magnificent state. Besides, recent exhibits will make you feel in the 1900s California. You can also visit The North Baker Research Library and the Museum Store.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

For those who love cinema and culture, here you will find excellent collections of modern art. Works by Pollack, Warhol, Matisse, Picasso and many other artists. First, will start your visit with a delicious coffee. Then, you can go to the top-not gift shop full of sleek gadgets and glossy art books. Here, you’ll find a building full of abstract art with the best opportunities for recreation and education.

Press Club – Yerba Buena Lane

If you want to have some relaxing time, this will be the perfect place for you. Across the street, you’ll find this spot and have the opportunity to of a delicious glass of wine with your dinner. On the other hand, if you want some adventure you can taste as many offerings of wine as you wish. Also, you’ll see a cultural focal point for the SoMa area with museums, activities and peaceful gardens.

How to get there

There are different ways to get to South of Market from de San Francisco Airport (SFO):

  • By BART: it is a 29-minute journey from the Airport to Powell St. It has a price of $6 to 9 USD.
  • By Bus: from SFO Airport terminal to 9th st & Folsom St, it is a 54-minute journey. It has a price of $2 to 3 USD.
  • By Taxi: you can take a taxi from the airport to SoMa for $75 to 95 USD. It is a 16-minute journey.
  • By Drive: you can rent a car at the airport for $1 to 2 USD.

When to go

The best time to visit SoMa is during spring and fall. There you’ll have the most comfortable temperatures. 

How long

To visit SoMa and all its atractions I recommend you to take a week. Then you’ll have the chance to not miss a single thing. 

Opening and Closing Hours

  • California Historical Society: it opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays.
  •  San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: it opens from Sunday to Saturday. It’s normally working from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. On Thursday and Saturdays it works until 7:00 p.m
  • Press Club – Yerba Buena Lane: It opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 4:00 p.m to 10:00 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays it opens until midnight.

This is one of San Francisco’s most important neighborhoods so I recommend you to book your hotel and restaurants in advance so you can have the best prices. 

Inside Information

If you want to sample cuisine from around the world, here you’ll have the best trucks for you. Be ready to enjoy all the tasty snacks and meals offered here. Also, this is an interesting place to walk around with little cafes and amazing buildings all around. Remember to take with you your comfortable shoes and the best clothes. Don’t forget your camera either.

History

SoMa became a burgeoning pioneer community during the mid-19th century. It started out with low-density residential buildings and gradually emerged with new industrial zones near the waterfront.

Later, from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, this place was served by several streetcar lines. Then, it became home not only to warehousing and light industry but also to a big population and a great working class.

Oracle Park

This is the Home of the San Francisco Giants Major League baseball team. If you are a baseball lover you can’t miss a game in this place. Over here, you’ll find amazing seats, incredible staff and the possibility of getting in and out of the stadium without annoying crowds. Also, you’ll have the funniest experience of a baseball game. Besides, if you get early, you can walk around the outfield and see the harbor.

This place is perfect for every family member. At first, you’ll have the pleasure of touring the Napa Valley in the San Francisco area. Later, you can taste the wine at the amazing vineyards. Also, there is a stop in the vineyards with a friendly and informative host. They will teach you everything while you enjoy your wine. You can also book this for a private tour with your couple and have a completely different experience.
