Île de Gorée, Dakar, Senegal is an amazing little island 20 minutes from the Senegal capital Dakar. To get there you will need to take a ferry from Dakar’s main harbor. Île de Gorée is famous for is past origins as an essential stop on the Atlantics trade routes from Afri.

Things to do

Slave House

The most important thing for anyone going to gorée is to visit the Slave House, also called “Slave”, a museum with a dark history. However, the famous pink house and consequently, the islandin general, is known for its triangular trade (Atlantic Treaty). On the other hand, know the famous Door of the trip without return, where an official of the place will tell you the dark story that happened at that place.

Streets

Take a walk through the streets and alleys. Most notable, are the colorful stripes of bougainvillea, which cascade over the tops of the high walls of the beautiful garden. In addition, it is a place with a quiet charm to walk, where car horns won’t bother you. On the other hand, you can meet mixed race matriarchs, who are famous for their beauty, grace and business acumen.

Henriette Bathily Women’s Museum

In the shadow of the famous Slave House, certainly, there is a two-story house dating from the 18th century. It is a cultural space that aims to promote what it was at that time and is today the role of women in Senegal. Also, you will discover that like that of men, the role that women had to adopt was fundamental from the colonial era to the struggle for independence. On the other hand, in this interesting Museum, you will observe traditional objects, works of art, crafts, clothing, and jewelry.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Dakar Airport (DKR) 12 minutes to the pier. From the pier, it is 20 minutes by ferry to reach the Île de Gorée.

When to go

From November to May it is better, avoiding the warm summer rainy season.

The Île de Gorée has a good size. You can spend many hours distracted, walking, as well as, exploring the stores. Also, marvel at the extraordinary sea views.

History
