Activity/Place Highlights

There is no better way to enjoy this trip than from a boat. Navigating you can admire every part of the surroundings of Bonifacio. You will be able to observe the medieval style of the city at the top due to the large limestone cliffs that nature itself has sculpted thanks to the wind. In addition, you will see the waves of the majestic indigo sea.

As you continue with your previous, little by little, any impression of precariousness disappears. Massive stone fortifications appear, as well as churches, as well as a network of very narrow streets.

Grain de Sable

Located next to the beach Sutta Rocca, rises from the waters of the sea a large limestone massif. This is the product of the fall of the cliffs and is named Grain de Sable.

You can also take a walk along the cliff, which will take you from the old town to the Pertusato lighthouse. This is a trip of approximately 2 and a half hours, round trip. The lighthouse offers spectacular views of Sardinia, as well as the view along the cliffs towards Bonifacio.

How to get there

Bonifacio is located on the cliffs to the south of Corsica, the city dominates the Strait of Bonifacio that separates this island of Sardinia. The nearest airport is Figari Sud-Corse Airport, located only 20 kilometers away, 20 minutes by car to your destination. It is also 30 minutes from the port of Porto-Vecchio, which is about 50 minutes by ferry.

When to go

Throughout the year, although the winter months are less recommended. August is the only month in which the city fills with visitors, so avoid it if you prefer solitude.

How long

A single day is enough to explore the wonders of Bonifacio. If you want to know everything in depth, you could choose to stay a weekend to explore all its streets and admire all its great landscapes.

Opening and Closing Hours

To enjoy the trip it is advisable to start early, travel all the tourist places and beaches. In addition, there are restaurants for all pockets in the old town and around the port, as well as malls and varied locales. Most of these places close at 10 pm, however, some nightclubs close later.

Planning

Bonifacio has many places to stay, from large 5-star hotels, family inns to a bubble frozen in the cliffs. You must reserve a time if you go in high season, although you will always have many options. It is important to book flights with time, to have your ticket secure.

Inside Information

The walk to the old town begins at the port, where there are a parking lot and local bus stops. The walks along the cliffs start at the top of the old town. It is also important and recommendable to rent a car to move around the city, it is the most comfortable. Of course, if you want to completely admire the views of the beaches and move to the nearby islands, you must rent a boat. Bicycles are also a good option if you like to go hiking.

History

From the ninth century, Pisa, Genoa, Aragon, and France fought for Corsica and shaped the imposing character of Boniface through the construction of fortifications. The city became one of the military and maritime poles of Corsica. In 1533 the city was destroyed by a plague, however, it was rebuilt by the French. It belonged to the Genoese until 1768.

Other nearby attractions

In Ajaccio, towards the west coast of the island of Corsica, you can take a wonderful walk through the natural reserve of Scandola. In addition to having spectacular views, you can see the rock formations of Piana and get into the Gulf of Girolata. On your boat trip, you will arrive at a site declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site, the Scandola peninsula. You will be delighted and very surprised by the rock formations that protrude from the sea and navigate among them.
