Leptis Magna – Tripoli, Libya

Leptis Magna, Tripoli, Libya, is a place that will leave you completely fascinated with all its cultural history. Here, you will find one of the most famous remains of antiquity in the world. Also, you can get to know the ruins of this legendary city and travel back in time to a mysterious past. This will be the perfect place for those fans of history and hidden treasures in the world. 

Things to do

The Theatre

At first, you must appreciate all the splendid views. You can find dem from the theater’s upper tiers. Over there, you can walk around its 70 meters and large parts of its structure. Also, you can be delight by its amazing ornamentations and statues adorning the theatre. In the same way, you’ll be able to visit the Hadrian Baths and its pools. These places ruins remain intact. You can leave without visiting the bathhouse, one of the largest ever built outside Rome.

The Monuments

This historic city has a lot of monuments that will leave you completely impressed. First, you can visit the Severan Arch, the Palaestra or the historic Sports Ground. Then you will have the opportunity to discover the Nymphaeum, the Colonnaded Street and walk around the Severan Forum and Basilica. Then, don’t miss the Harbour and the Arch of Tajan. Between them and the Arch of Tiberius, you will be completely enchanted. 

The Circus 

Before you get to the Circus, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the Market. Over there, you can take the time you’ll need to visit a local restaurant and enjoy a tasty Libyan lunch. Then, remember to provide yourself with all the information and documentation about the place at the Leptis museum. Finally, you can visit the last monument, the Circus. Over there, you will be amazed by its 450×100 meters.

This incredible place was one of the largest ever built in the entire Roman World. Also, you’ll learn how this was the only one of this kind in Libya.

How to get there 

The only way to get to Leptis Magna is by renting a car. You can do this at Tripoli Airport (TIP). It is an hour and 50 minutes trip.  

When to go

This place has mild weather all year-round. Above all, you don’t have to worry about the seasons.

How long

To completely explore this place I recommend you to take at least 5 hours. However, spend a day in this part of Libya so you can get to know all the amazing touristic spots it has. 

Opening and Closing Hours

This place opens from Sunday to Saturday. From 12:00 am to 11:59 pm. 

Planning

To visit this place you don’t have to book in advance. However, If you want to spend the night, you can stay at the Leptis Hotel Funduq Lebda. Remember to make your reservation in advance.

Inside Information

Unlike other similar tourist places, this one you will be able to travel the way you prefer. Likewise, you will have a tourist guide nearby to support you during your trip.  

Also, the weather in this place is quite hot, so remember to bring your water to stay hydrated. Also, don’t forget to include your sunscreen, a hat, and your best walking shoes.

History

The history of this place goes back to the Roman period. There, this city was founded by Phoenician settlers around 11000 BC. It was one of the main cities of Carthage as well as a Mediterranean sea power. Thus, it became part of the Roman Republic. 

After, at the post roman ages, the city was looted by a group of Berbers, causing enormous damage to its population. However, the ruins of Leptis Magna remain the most impressive of the Roman period. 

Archaeological discoveries have continued to be made here today. In this way, the finest samples of representative mosaics ever seen have been obtained. To this day, studies and explorations are still being carried out to delve further into the historical culture of Libya.

Roman Sabratha

80 km from Tripoli, you will find one of the most beautiful and intact ancient Roman ruins in all of Libya. Likewise, you will be able to enjoy a place with your family or friends. This is a pretty safe area, a privileged place, and well-preserved ruins. Here you will have the feeling that you are surrounded by the souls of the past. Also, you can enjoy a wonderful adventure exploring the site. You can’t help but have one of the most moving experiences of your life.
