In northern Arizona, near the Utah border, there is this magical world known as Coyote Buttes. You can easily get there from a small town on the Glen Canyon Dam, called Page.

Coyote Buttes often goes unnoticed because it is surrounded by national parks such as the Bryce Canyon in the north and the Grand Canyon in the south, so you can enjoy your trip and explore the canyons and outcrops without so many people around. However, it is necessary to have a local guide because the landscape can be disconcerting, and you will also need someone instructing you about the history and important facts of the place.

The access to Coyote Buttes is controlled, so you’ll have to wait for your number in order to get in, but don’t be discouraged, while you wait for your turn you can venture near Page in Cardiac Canyon and Canyon X, these are two of the many Arizona slot canyons. You can take a good walk and admire the sandstone chasms of transparent walls hundreds of feet high.

There is also the Adjacent Antelope Canyon, the most famous slot machine, but that is why it is always crowded, compared to Cardiac and X, they are far from the beaten track and are as fascinating as the aforementioned.

Cardiac Canyon is a very dark abyss, it seems like an endless night, a door to the center of the earth. Many of its slots are very dangerous and can’t be entered without the use of ropes. The desert temperature of the surface is scorching and falls through the shadows of the canyons. Starting the road, you will find a path just a little wider than a hotel corridor, and pink sandstone walls will be present, which are reduced to shoulder width or even less.

The walk follows a broader part, through the canyon system that connects to the X Canyon. This is very different from the previous one. It has a tunnel with certain points of light from the rocks above, which show intense colors that go through the sandstone and reach great depths before reaching the blinding brightness and heat of the surface.

Coyote Buttes is divided into two parts: the North Buttes and the South Buttes. The Wave, located in the north, is a group of sandstone of varied colors that runs 4.8 km through an area without dune and rocky trails, from Wire Pass to Highway 89 to Kanab. Its main formation, the bowl, is a smoothed rock that extends to all sides like a petrified sea. Only 20 people per day are allowed on this site, but such control is essential because of the fragility of the area.

To the east, you will find the White Pockets area, which is also very little known, although perhaps it has the most amazing of all the formations. You’ll find a very thin sheet of white sandstone in the shape of a brain on the most predominant red sandstone of the region andalso on the layers of banana-yellow rocks. All these formations are mixed together and offer a wonderful view to the tourist.

To the south, it is more difficult to access, since a 4WD vehicle is necessary, although it is easy to obtain the permits of these. One of its most beautiful canyons is the Teepees, a group of hills that shine in golden color at sunrise and sunset. The perfect place to sit and admire the landscape of more than 200 million years is the area of Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness and Bryce Canyon, to the north.

Without a doubt, this trip is a unique experience in life, impossible to miss. Only a bold person, with a desire to venture and see the wonders that the world offers and its nature would dare to take away all these memories and life experiences.
