A polar bear realm: Explore the Canadian Churchill

The cold wind getting under your skin while you’re walking through the snow that surrounds you, waiting to see some polar bears gathering together to hunt some seals. You will be exploring their unique kingdom into the wild and stunning tundra at the edge of the Arctic, in the northern part of Manitoba, at Churchill, Canada.

Towns like Churchill are quite special because they’re not easy to reach; therefore, the only way to get here is either by taking a plane or a train. The best period for this journey goes from early October to mid-November, lasting around six weeks, this is your best opportunity to see the bears.

At first, the town may seem too simple for you, but once you start exploring it, you will discover that it has a lot more to give. The surroundings will take you through ice-covered, snow-laden houses and tundra to its Inuit culture. It’s important for you to know that Churchill has three things in abundance: polar bears (the main reason why you’re here), amazing views, and people with characters big enough to fill a stadium. The longer you stay in this town, the more you will love it.

Early in the morning, you will be boarding a classic old school bus that will take you to the station for the distinctive tundra buggies. Patience is required in this type of journeys because it’s possible that you won’t see any type of wild-life at the beginning. Eventually, you will get to see not only the polar bears but also some Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, snowy owls, and caribou.

As Hudson Bay starts to freeze, the bears begin to find their way out to the vast expanse of ice in search of seals, which are their favorite meal. After driving around the tundra, you will discover that after all, it isn’t a lifeless place as you might have thought at the beginning of your journey, but in fact, it’s full of life and beauty.

Just for you to know

Several companies organize trips to Churchill not only to explore the land but also to see the polar bears. We recommend you to book in advance because this journey takes place on a short-term, and that means that is going to be really demanded. Also, accommodation is limited but one of the best is the Churchill Motel.
